Big Bear Mountain Flying Experience

Where Performance Meets Precision.

Welcome to Big Bear (L35) — one of California’s most beautiful and challenging mountain airports.
This is where pilots learn how aircraft, altitude, and environment come together.
It’s not just another training flight — it’s a masterclass in mountain flying, performance management, and real-world aeronautical decision-making.

What You’ll Learn

  • High-density altitude operations and performance calculation

  • Short-field and soft-field takeoffs and landings

  • Mountain weather interpretation — wind shear, updrafts, and downdrafts

  • Emergency planning and terrain escape routes

  • Power management and mixture control for high-altitude airports

  • Approach stabilization and airspeed control in thinner air

This training challenges even experienced pilots to refine their control and precision. You’ll learn to think ahead of the airplane — and master flying in environments where margin for error is smaller and the payoff is greater.

Altitude. Weather. Awareness.

Big Bear Airport sits 6,752 feet above sea level, surrounded by rugged terrain, mountain winds, and quickly changing weather.
You’ll experience true density altitude performance — learning how temperature, elevation, and weight affect climb, power, and handling.

Our instructors guide you through real-world conditions, so you don’t just read about mountain flying — you live it.

The Experience

Departing from Van Nuys (KVNY), you’ll climb east over the San Bernardino Mountains into the crisp air of Big Bear Valley.
You’ll practice high-elevation takeoffs and landings, work through terrain navigation, and learn how to safely manage power, speed, and attitude when performance margins are tight.

After the flight, enjoy a lakeside lunch in Big Bear Village, surrounded by forest and mountain peaks — the perfect debrief setting for an unforgettable flight.
